Jacques Cartier, the French explorer from Saint Malo, was the first man to claim Canada as a part of France. Cartier was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River (le fleuve Saint-Laurent), which runs through Quebec City (la ville de Québec).
