What to Expect in Quebec City

Country
Canada

Province
Quebec

Climate
Located in the Northern hemisphere, Quebec City has a humid continental climate. It is characterized by cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Ample precipitation is seen throughout the year, but isn't enough to scare away visitors!

Quebec City is one of the snowiest cities in Canada with a prolonged winter season, which the city utilizes to its fullest extent with sleigh rides and winter festivities galore! Spring and autumn tend to be quite short, although autumn produces spectacular foliage colors. The summer is the sunniest, as well as the wettest, time of year, allowing visitors to enjoy all the indoor and outdoor activities the city has to offer.

Languages
Quebec City and its surrounding region is largely Francophone. The large majority of city residents are native French-speakers, but English is still spoken among some citizens.

If you don't speak a lick of French, have no fear: Quebecois are quite friendly, and all hotel, museum, and tourist stops have English-speaking personnel to assist you. Most museum tours offer a version in English and restaurant menus are generally in both languages as well.

Currency
Quebec City operates on Canadian currency. Visitors can either exchange their money prior to arriving in the city or once they arrive. Main branch banks and caisses populaires (Credit Union offices) will exchange most foreign currencies. In Quebec City, Caisse Populaire at 19 rue des Jardins is open daily in the summer and Monday-Friday the rest of the year.

Tourism offices can often exchange money or point you to a place that will. Try to avoid hotels and commercial exchange offices for fiscal exchanges, as they tend to have the highest transaction fees. ATMs often offer the best exchange rates.
