Smith Café in Cap-Rouge felt less like a quick coffee stop and more like a neighborhood living room.
When we visited, it was busy — really busy. Tables were full, people were coming and going, and a surprising number of customers had laptops open. It had that slightly chaotic but appealing feeling of a café that people actually use, not just one designed to look good in photos.
And the setup is genuinely cute. The building has two floors, lots of wood, a big open counter area, and a view toward Cap-Rouge’s famous railway trestle. For this part of Quebec City, it feels like a very good fit.
The Cap-Rouge Smith has something unusual: pizza
The part that caught our attention was the pizza counter.
Smith’s official Cap-Rouge page lists a dedicated pizzeria here, separate from the regular café and buvette menus. The current pizza menu is built around 12-inch, wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas, with choices ranging from Margherita and Quattro Formaggi to smoked salmon, prosciutto and a spicy honey-and-pancetta pizza.
That makes this branch feel a little different from the typical Smith Café experience. You can still come for coffee, pastries or a sandwich, but this one can also turn into lunch or dinner without changing locations.
We did not come specifically for pizza, so this is not a pizza review. But the fact that the pizzeria is built right into the Cap-Rouge location makes it worth knowing about.
It was crowded — and clearly popular with laptop people
The crowd was probably the strongest impression from our visit.
There were people chatting, people eating, people standing at the counter and a lot of people working on laptops. If you are looking for a quiet hidden coffee shop where you will have an entire room to yourself, this probably is not that place at a busy time.
But if you like cafés that feel alive, it works. The number of laptops also makes it obvious that people are comfortable staying for a while rather than treating it as a grab-and-go stop.

The location is a big part of why it works
The Cap-Rouge branch is at 4292 rue Saint-Félix in the old village area. Smith describes the location as being near the shoreline, the nautical park and the Jacques-Cartier beach promenade. It is also close to the huge Cap-Rouge railway trestle that dominates the neighborhood skyline.
The café itself occupies the historic Maison Mathieu-Delisle. Quebec’s heritage inventory dates the house to sometime between 1830 and 1880, so this is not a generic new-build coffee shop dropped into the neighborhood.
That setting is part of the appeal. You can combine a coffee stop with a walk around Cap-Rouge or continue toward the water. We have a separate guide to the Jacques-Cartier Beach Promenade in Cap-Rouge if you want to make more of the visit.
Would we go back?
Yes.
Not because it was quiet — it definitely was not when we were there — but because it felt like a real neighborhood gathering place. The two-floor layout gives it character, the bridge view makes the setting more interesting, and the dedicated pizza operation gives this Smith location something extra.
If you are already exploring Cap-Rouge, it is an easy stop to work into the day.
