Established in 1998, the Musée de la Civilisation, or Museum of Civilization, continuously holds 10 exhibitions simultaneously on its 6,000 square meter surface. Its location is right on the river-front in the historic district of Québec City and is within close proximity to the Place Royale. While the unique architecture of the museum is quite modern, with a sleek and minimalist design, the building merges poetically with the historic district. The museum focuses its exhibits on visitor participation and interaction, making it family fun for all ages!
The Museum of Civilization prides itself on offering its visitors a collection of diverse exhibitions. There are 4 permanent exhibitions, leaving room for 6 other temporary exhibitions. “This is Our Story” is one of the permanent exhibitions, which features the history and culture of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, giving a unique insight into the history of the myriad cultures that have inhabited Québec. The last permanent exhibition, “People of Québec…Then and Now”, is a remarkable display that will intrigue both locals and visitors.
The temporary exhibitions can be extremely diverse. Ranging from Indonesian culture to urban infrastructure, the exhibitions at the Museum of Civilization have something for everyone. My daughter’s favorite is the Youth Zone called “Once Upon a Time” which is included in your admission. Here your child as well as yourself can don costumes from all your favorite stories such as Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Bluebeard. The costumes are beautifully crafted. One of my daughter’s favorites was battling a seven headed beast. My daughter did not want to leave.
I would love to visit the First Peoples exhibit.
