Tim Roberts, a stalwart in the world of circus arts education, has left an indelible mark on Quebec City’s dynamic circus arts scene. From his role as Managing Director of the Quebec Circus School (ECQ) to his recent election as President of En Piste, the national circus arts association, Roberts has orchestrated a transformation that reverberates through the city’s artistic and cultural fabric. In an exclusive interview, he takes us on a journey through his remarkable tenure, offering insights into his strategic vision and plans for the future.
Joining the ECQ team in 2016 and subsequently assuming the mantle of Managing Director in 2019, Roberts has propelled a paradigm shift in circus arts education. His approach is centered on empowering students to cultivate their artistic identities. “We support them in developing their own vision of the circus they want to do, rather than trying to fit into the box of the circus that is already being done,” Roberts explains. This philosophy has birthed a diverse tapestry of circus arts styles, enriching the city’s performance landscape.
The ECQ’s influence isn’t confined to artistic boundaries. Roberts proudly speaks of the school’s community engagement, particularly through its recreational department. He notes the program’s impact on individuals with Down’s Syndrome and autism, along with its outreach to homeschooled youth, fostering socialization and inclusion. “Our commitment stretches beyond the stage, reaching into the very heart of the community,” Roberts emphasizes.
Located within the historic Saint-Esprit church in Limoilou, the ECQ’s setting resonates deeply with Roberts. He draws parallels between the church’s historical role and the school’s mission, fostering a sense of community and vocation among students. “This church embodies the essence of our purpose – not merely education, but the cultivation of a community of artists,” Roberts reflects.
Drawing from his experience as President of the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools, Roberts offers a global perspective on Quebec City’s circus scene. He highlights the city’s proximity to a vast continent, fostering a unique sense of possibility for students. “Quebec City offers a canvas of boundless potential, igniting creativity and exploration,” Roberts observes.
As President of En Piste, Roberts is committed to bolstering Quebec City’s position as a second hub for circus arts in the province. He envisions a collaborative ecosystem, advocating for more rehearsal spaces and a permanent professional development program for circus artists. “Through collaboration and shared vision, we aim to fortify opportunities for our circus community,” Roberts affirms.
Roberts views the ECQ as a mosaic piece within Quebec’s cultural landscape, collaborating with institutions like Le Musée de la Civilisation and delivering captivating street performances that seamlessly integrate with the city’s vibrant spirit.
For aspiring circus artists, Roberts imparts wisdom rooted in the Japanese philosophy of “Kaizen,” urging them to embrace incremental growth. “Strive to be better than you were yesterday, and you’ll discover a fulfilling path of artistic evolution,” Roberts advises.
When asked about the future, Roberts exudes enthusiasm. “Kaizen, my friend, Kaizen,” he says with a smile. He envisions a future marked by steady progress, nurturing innovation across the school’s spectrum. “In five years’ time, we’ll look back in awe at the strides we’ve made. And I believe the city will share in that awe,” Roberts concludes.
Tim Roberts’ legacy intertwines leadership, art, and community engagement, shaping Quebec City’s circus arts landscape into an ever-evolving masterpiece. As the city continues to flourish as a cultural hub, Roberts’ legacy remains a driving force in its creative and artistic journey.
