Bistro Hortus Review

Bistro Hortus Review: A Farm-to-Table Experience

There are few things more comforting than a cozy bistro with a fantastic atmosphere, great music, and delicious food. Bistro Hortus is a perfect example of this. The wooden furniture and brick walls create a welcoming ambiance that makes you feel right at home. The restaurant’s name, Hortus, means garden in Latin, and it is not hard to see why. Everything from the wooden walls to the plates and cutlery is inspired by nature.

Charcuterie Delights

The charcuterie is beautiful and tastes amazing. They sell some of their products, and we especially loved the carrot chutney. The best part is that they source all their ingredients locally, including the wine. They carry local Quebec wines, which they rotate every couple of weeks or so.

Burger Bliss

The burger is incredible, with caramelized onions and currants. We were also delighted to find out that they have their own bees, and the fresh honey is complementary to try. They even allow you to buy the carrots and other side dishes. The wooden walls surrounded by the entire eco-friendly atmosphere give it a very nice appeal.

Unique Presentation

Even the presentation has a unique element to it. They serve the food on cutting boards and flower pots, following along with the eco-friendly theme. The ketchup, mayo, and other condiments are all handmade and handcrafted. We tried the crabcake special, which was rather unique with varying vegetable elements.

The Star of the Show

By far, one of the stars of the show was the poutine. It wasn’t exactly a traditional poutine, but with some very upscale additions like lobster sauce, Nordic shrimp, and cheese from the local area. It was a true masterpiece.

Misleading Menus

However, the printed menu simply does not do justice to what the meals inside offer. In fact, if they ever made an English version, the menu really should not have a job anymore. The food is great, but the menu’s description of the dishes is not accurate. Even the French version of the menu really doesn’t leave a lot to be desired. The food itself is great, and the restaurant is great, but the menu descriptions are just completely not based on the accurate reality of how good it is.

Fresh and High-Quality

Everything here was very fresh, high-quality, and had an incredibly wonderful presentation. My daughter, in particular, loved the carrots so much that we decided to buy some of the carrot chutney to take home in jars. We really appreciated the connection they have with the land where the ingredients come from. It is a true farm-to-table experience.

Bistro Hortus is an amazing restaurant that truly embodies the farm-to-table concept. From the locally sourced ingredients to the unique presentation, it is a dining experience that you will never forget. The only downside is that the menu descriptions do not do the dishes justice, so you will just have to try them all yourself. Trust us; it will be worth it.
