Bistro Hortus is built around local and organic ingredients in the heart of Old Quebec. Our visit stood out for thoughtful presentation, house-made accompaniments and a strong connection between the menu and Quebec producers.
Warm, garden-inspired atmosphere
Wood, brick and botanical details create a comfortable bistro rather than a formal fine-dining room. The name “Hortus” means garden in Latin, and the design carries that idea through the furniture, serving pieces and overall mood.
Charcuterie and local products
The charcuterie board was beautifully presented, and the carrot chutney was memorable enough that we bought a jar to take home. The restaurant’s emphasis on Quebec ingredients also extended to the wine list during our visit.
The dishes we remember
The burger combined caramelized onions with currants for a sweet-savory contrast. A crab-cake special paired seafood with several vegetable elements. The most distinctive dish was a nontraditional poutine enriched with lobster sauce, Nordic shrimp and local cheese.
Presentation with substance
Some dishes arrived on cutting boards or in vessels that echoed the garden theme. The handmade condiments and careful vegetable preparations made the presentation feel connected to the food rather than decorative for its own sake.
One weakness: the menu descriptions
At the time of our visit, the printed descriptions undersold the food and did not communicate how much care went into each plate. The cooking and presentation were much stronger than the wording suggested.
