What to expect
Most operators begin with a safety briefing and basic instruction from a musher. Depending on the package, two guests may share a sled and switch between driving and riding. Total visit time can be longer than the advertised trail time because instruction, equipment and time with the dogs are part of the experience.
When to go
The season depends on safe snow conditions. It often begins around mid-December and runs into March, but dates vary by weather and operator. Reserve directly and confirm conditions shortly before traveling.
What to wear
Dress more warmly than you would for an ordinary walk. Use a moisture-wicking base layer, insulated middle layer, wind-resistant outerwear, warm boots, mittens and face protection. The passenger can become colder than the person handling the sled.
Choosing an operator
Ask about trail time, transportation, minimum ages, accessibility, cancellation rules and dog-welfare practices. Many locations require a car or advance shuttle arrangements. A winter itinerary can also include the seasonal Ice Hotel.
I adventurous and I’ve tried a lot of things but never dog sledding. I would love to try it and see the beautiful country while I’m at it.
