September 25, 2026 update: A J.A. Moisan reopening was confirmed in August after months of uncertainty. New operators are expected to bring the historic rue Saint-Jean grocery back, but I still have not found a reliable public opening date. Until there is a same-day first-party or strong local confirmation that the doors are actually open, treat this as an announced reopening rather than an already reopened store.
From closure to a planned reopening
The distinction matters if you are planning a shopping stop. The historic store is part of Quebec City history, but a reopening announcement is not the same thing as verified operating hours. Until a current first-party source or reliable local report confirms an opening date, I would not build an itinerary around being able to shop there.
The grocery closed on January 24, 2025 after 154 years in business. Owner Donna Willett said the specialty-grocery model was no longer financially viable, and the store liquidated its inventory. At the time, the closure appeared permanent.
In August 2026, signs appeared in the windows announcing a comeback. Local reporting said new operators intended to reopen in fall 2026. The August 17 report from Le Carrefour de Québec says the new tenants previously ran a similar business in France for about 15 years.
No precise date was public when this article was updated. “Fall 2026” is a plan, not confirmation that the doors are open today, so check before making a special shopping trip.
What the new J.A. Moisan may become
The reported plan is to preserve the fine-grocery identity while adding more prepared food and seating. Window messaging described the concept as “J.A. Moisan à l’italienne,” suggesting a stronger Italian influence alongside fine foods and local products.
That direction could give the shop a new business model while maintaining continuity with the historic name. The practical details—opening day, final hours, product range and whether every announced element launches immediately—remain pending until the business publishes them or opens.
Why J.A. Moisan matters
Jean-Alfred Moisan opened the grocery on rue Saint-Jean in 1871. It became widely described as the oldest grocery or specialty grocery of its kind in North America. Claims using “oldest” depend on definitions and continuity, so the more durable fact is that the shop operated from the nineteenth century into 2025 under a recognizable historic identity.
The age was only part of the attraction. The old-fashioned interior, cheese and charcuterie counters, imported foods and pantry goods made it feel different from a modern supermarket. It functioned as both a neighbourhood business and a piece of living commercial history.
Where to find the storefront
J.A. Moisan is at 685 rue Saint-Jean in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood, west of the Old Quebec walls. Rue Saint-Jean is easy to explore on foot, with independent shops, cafés and restaurants along the route.
If you are already in the neighbourhood, walking past the storefront is reasonable even before a confirmed opening. Do not confuse this section of rue Saint-Jean with the portion inside the fortifications, and check current transit, parking and accessibility information if you are travelling specifically for the store.
Should you visit now?
Visit only after confirming that the reopening has occurred and checking the current hours. The useful answer has changed twice in less than two years: J.A. Moisan was an operating institution, then a closed historic storefront, and now a comeback is planned.
That changing status is exactly why older travel articles can mislead. This page will keep the dates explicit instead of pretending the business has been continuously open. For another long-running Quebec City retailer, read our guide to Simons and its Old Quebec flagship.
