Vieux Carré is an active speakeasy-style cocktail bar at 36½ rue Saint-Pierre in Old Quebec. It sits close to Place Royale, Place de Paris, Petit-Champlain and the waterfront streets of the Old Port.

What kind of place is Vieux Carré?

That double reference works particularly well in Old Quebec, where the bar occupies a historic setting near Place Royale.
The name does not mean the Quebec City bar is a New Orleans theme attraction. Its identity belongs to Groupe La Tanière and emphasizes Quebec products and hospitality.

One of the bar’s biggest strengths is location. The official site places it at 36½ rue Saint-Pierre, steps from Place Royale, with views toward Place de Paris and the St. Lawrence River.
That lets you build an evening without bouncing across the city. Walk the Old Port, Place Royale and Petit-Champlain, then stop for a drink instead of turning cocktail hour into a transportation project.
The half-number address is real, so look carefully when walking the block.
Part of Groupe La Tanière
Groupe La Tanière operates several distinct Quebec City concepts rather than repeating one restaurant format. Vieux Carré is the cocktail-focused member of that collection.
That connection matters when choosing where to go. A tasting-menu restaurant, a full dinner restaurant and a cocktail bar serve different purposes even when they share an ownership group.
Use the official Groupe La Tanière site if you are comparing concepts rather than assuming Vieux Carré is simply a smaller version of another restaurant.

The current Vieux Carré site says the bar wanted cocktails composed entirely of local spirits and highlights relationships with Quebec producers. That gives the menu a stronger local identity than a generic list of internationally standardized cocktails.

Why the Lower Town location works
Vieux Carré is only steps from Place Royale and close to the St. Lawrence River, so it fits naturally into an evening in Lower Town. The bar’s own site describes the setting as speakeasy-style and emphasizes its position near Place de Paris and the river rather than presenting it as a destination isolated from the neighbourhood.
That matters in practical terms. You can have dinner nearby, stop for a cocktail and take a short walk through the Old Port without spending the evening moving between distant parts of the city. Use those live sources for current hours and reservations because schedules can change.

The bar is in Lower Town. Reaching it from Upper Town may involve stairs, Côte de la Montagne or the funicular, depending on your route.
For a relaxed evening, pair one drink here with a walk through Place Royale and the Old Port rather than rushing between distant neighbourhoods.
Who will like it?
Vieux Carré makes sense for visitors who want thoughtful cocktails, a small-room atmosphere and a location that feels connected to Old Quebec rather than generic nightlife.
It is not the obvious choice for a loud club night or a full family meal. It fills a different niche: a late or pre-dinner stop where the room, drinks and neighborhood all matter.
