Québec Winter Carnival Guide: What to See and How to Plan

The Québec Winter Carnival turns the city’s coldest season into a 10-day outdoor celebration. The next Carnival is scheduled for February 5–14, 2027.

What makes the Carnival special?

The modern event grew from Québec City’s winter celebrations and has become one of the world’s best-known cold-weather festivals. Its ambassador is Bonhomme Carnaval, the smiling snowman in a red cap and traditional arrow sash.

The festival is spread across multiple sites rather than contained in one building. That is part of the fun, but it also means visitors should study the current map and group activities by location.

How to dress

Dress for extended time outdoors, not just the walk from the hotel. A warm base layer, insulated coat, waterproof boots, hat, mittens and neck protection make a major difference. Hand warmers are useful, especially for evening parades.

Children may be comfortable while moving and then become cold while waiting. Carry an extra dry layer and plan indoor warm-up breaks.

• Use public transportation or walk when road closures make parking difficult.

Is the Carnival good for families?
